6 Things to Know Before Getting Married at Edinburgh City Chambers

1. Choose the Right Ceremony Time for Beautiful Light

If photography matters to you, timing is everything. Earlier ceremonies often give softer, more flattering natural light especially for portraits outside on the Royal Mile.

In winter, light fades quickly in Edinburgh- around 3pm is getting dark, so planning ahead is key.

2. Prepare for the Royal Mile Crowds

Because City Chambers is located on the Royal Mile, it can get busy — especially in summer and during festival season.

A relaxed mindset is everything. Sometimes the liveliness adds character and authentic Edinburgh atmosphere to your wedding photos.

3. Consider an Intimate Guest List

City Chambers is perfect for intimate weddings and elopements. Smaller guest lists create a calm, emotional atmosphere that photographs beautifully and allows more flexibility for portraits.

The Wee Neuk can accommodate a couple and their two witnesses only, this room could be the perfect choice for couples.

The Alexander suite is on the ground floor within the main entrance to Edinburgh City Chambers. The ceremony room can host up to 36 guests.

The European room can host up to 70 guests with the couple standing and overlooks the quadrangle courtyard to the south.

4. Think About Your Exit Moment

Confetti exit outside City Chambers is always a highlight. If you’re planning this, bring biodegradable confetti and let your photographer guide guests into position for the best light and composition - Although it is prohibited to throw confetti on the courtyard we can take this photo on the Royal Mile.

It creates joyful, timeless images.

5. Plan a Short Old Town Photo Walk

One of the advantages of getting married at Edinburgh City Chambers is the location. Within minutes, you have cobbled streets, historic closes, and dramatic architecture.

A short 30-minute couple’s walk can give you a full, romantic Edinburgh backdrop for your wedding gallery.

6. Choose a Photographer Who Knows the Venue

City Chambers has its own rhythm — the light, the flow of ceremonies, the best portrait spots. Working with a photographer who understands the venue helps your day feel relaxed and effortless.

In 2025 alone, I have photographed more than 30 weddings at City Chambers, which means I know how to anticipate the light and find beautiful, quiet corners even on the busiest days in Edinburgh. Experience at this venue makes a real difference — not just in the photographs, but in how relaxed you feel throughout your wedding day.
